User-Added & OSM Bins
Welcome to the Dog Waste Bins directory! To make it as easy as possible to dispose of dog waste bags responsibly, Bag It Bin It integrates verified public waste bins from OpenStreetMap alongside user-added bin locations pinned by dog walkers like you.
Understanding the Bins
Bins on the map are color-coded based on their source and have optimized visibility settings to ensure the map remains clear and easy to navigate:
Green Pins (OSM)
Zoom 14+Official public litter bins and dog waste bins imported directly from OpenStreetMap. These appear when zoomed to street level to keep the viewport clean in busy urban areas.
Blue Pins (User Added)
Zoom 12+Custom bin locations added by dog walkers in the area. These stay visible at wider zoom levels to help you plan your walk route and coordinate drops accordingly.
How It Works
Adding a Bin
When standing next to a bin, tap the Add Bin button on the bottom navigation bar. Confirm the prompt to pin it. Note: you must have an active GPS lock to add a new bin.
Verifying ("Bin OK?")
Tap any bin on the map. To prevent malicious reviews, you must be within 20 metres of the bin to vote Yes or No. When further away, you can use the Google Maps shortcut to navigate to it.
Removal & Warnings
To prevent outdated markers, our self-moderating system automatically flags and handles reported bins based on user feedback:
- 1 "No" vote: Registered in the system.
- 2 or more "No" votes: Bin displays a warning question mark (?) icon.
- 3 "No" votes: Community-added bins are automatically removed from the map. Note: Official OSM bins are never deleted from the map, but will continuously display the warning icon.
- "Yes" vote: Resets all "No" flags instantly back to clean status.
Removing Your Placed Bins
If you make a tagging mistake or a bin you added is no longer present, you can delete it immediately without waiting for other users' votes. Tap the blue marker you created and click the red "Remove" button inside the popup window.
Offline-Resilient Bin Syncing
Like bag tagging, all bin interactions are designed to work local-first. If you lose signal on your walk, you can still place bins, submit "Bin OK?" reports, or delete your own bins. The PWA automatically queues these actions in your local browser database and uploads them atomically to our server the moment your network connection returns.
